Xmas tree angel

fir tree angel

While I was applying different washes on some watercolour  paper and without preliminary drawing, I could see the outline of an angel appearing through the layers. So to make it more readable I emphasized its contour by painting it negatively .Then all I had to do was to add the branches of a fir tree and a bauble to finish off the Xmas theme. I like the somewhat stylized shape of this angel which makes it special and different from the traditional looking ones..

Autumnal mix

Autumnal melimelo

I had great fun painting this semi abstract mixture of  Autumn leaves. I used a lot the negative painting technique. Marina from the Hangar Art Centre gave me one of the pictures she had to work on. Autumn leaves was the theme of the day. I started with an outline of some of the leaves and then I just made up the others without planning… The end result is completely different from the picture..and I hope you like it !

Getting ready for Xmas in Valbonne

joyeux noel de valbonne arcades watermarked

This is going to be my Xmas card for this year in Valbonne with Father Xmas serving a Xmas pudding to one of his customers.

When the weather is sunny people have lunch outside even in winter !

I will have this design printed  in a postcard format (with envelope) which will be available for sale at the English Book Centre in Valbonne from next week.

Friends and and their 2 dogs at Café des Arcades Valbonne

2 dogs café des arcades

This is a commissioned painting as a farewell present for someone ‘s friend leaving Valbonne.

I went to the Cafe des Arcades as an incognito tourist taking pictures of the friend in question while she was having a drink at one of the tables. This friend did not know me so could not have guessed why I was around taking photos. It was such fun and exciting !

The painting will be a total surprise as a gift and will go to Australia!

I hope this sunny scene will trigger  happy memories  of some good time spent with friends in the buzzing village of Valbonne.

In the past year I have done other commissioned paintings one of which went to Singapore. I am so pleased that my watercolours find homes all over the world!

Yellow roses still life

yellow roses

A beautiful still life was set up on the table at the Hangar last week. Here is the result. I limited my palette and kept the yellow of the roses as a dominant colour to be repeated throughout the painting. At the end I added a fallen leaf as I felt there was an imbalance in the weight of the composition. Was it a good idea ?….
